Trumpf is top

Working with strong partners, Daimler AG is driving the forces of change in production. One of these partners is TRUMPF, a global, high-tech company and the winner of the Daimler Supplier Award in 2016.

Revolution in industrial manufacturing! Even the automobile industry is in the midst of radical change. Daimler is at the forefront of the transition to Industry 4.0. Even now, the manufacturer is taking advantage of digitalization in mass production in cooperation with innovative partners like the laser system specialist Trumpf.

For over 10 years, Daimler has counted on Trumpf when introducing new production methods. Working together, the two companies have put many innovations to use. “Robscan”, for example, is a laser joining technology used in the production of Mercedes-Benz passenger car models, including A, B, C, E and S-Class models. Robots with integrated welding units swing around the vehicle chassis. The highly efficient welding process is done on the fly – “welding on the fly.” Another special feature: the laser unit with an intelligent I-PFO focusing optics unit that can program and control itself. This joint development from Daimler and Trumpf is a milestone on the path to Industry 4.0. It comes from the TecFabrik at Daimler, where new production concepts are constantly being tested and perfected for mass production.

And the winner is: "Condition monitoring", a collaboratively implemented solution for Industry 4.0.

A drumroll for the best of the best!

In February 2017, Trumpf received the Daimler Supplier Award. This is the second time the laser specialist has been awarded this prize. At the beginning of 2008, Daimler honored the supplier in the “Innovation” category for the joint development of a welding robot with disk-laser technology. As one of only ten award winners, Trumpf has now been honored for its great performance in the “Partnership” category. In front of distinguished guests from the supplier industry, Daimler Board Members and the Heads of Procurement awarded the prizes.

Our years of cooperation are based on trust, open exchange of ideas and mutual respect. Especially in these times of increasing industrial digitalization, these cornerstones form the foundation of a successful partnership.

Peter Leibinger, Vice Chairman of the Managing Board of Trumpf GmbH + Co. KG and Chief Technology Officer

Wilfried Porth, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Human Resources and Director of Labor Relations, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Dr. Sabine Lutz, Head of International Procurement Services (IPS) at Daimler, congratulate Dr. Peter Leibinger (center) of TRUMPF.

Successful technology

Trumpf was honored for a collaboratively developed, Industry 4.0 solution used in the production of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Specifically, the sensor-based analysis of connected laser beam sources. Using “condition monitoring”, Trumpf service experts can perform trend analyses. With data provided by Daimler, this makes it possible to determine the possible risks of laser failure, reducing unplanned and expensive downtime.

An innovative laser welding procedure was another reason for the award. Sensors help balance out component oscillations autonomously during the welding process. This reduces the amount of material used, making the vehicle lighter. This is a distinct advantage, especially for electric cars that can then drive longer distances on one battery charge. Conceived cooperatively by Daimler and Trumpf, this laser welding technology is one of the most efficient joining processes in automobile construction as regards energy and resources. Excellent performance and an incentive for future cooperative developments!
