Battery Cells from Carbon-neutral Production
As an important contribution to climate-neutral mobility “Ambition 2039” Mercedes-Benz sources battery cells from carbon-neutral production for the first time.
Mercedes-Benz is taking the next step towards climate-neutral mobility “Ambition 2039”. “Part of the battery cells for the next vehicle generation of our EQ product and technology brand will be produced using 100% electricity from renewable energies”, said Markus Schäfer, Member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Corporate Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “As first result of the sustainability partnership with Farasis Energy, we will save well over 30% of the carbon footprint of future vehicle models’ entire battery by sourcing battery cells from carbon-neutral production.”
Farasis Energy (Ganzhou) Co., Ltd. is a Chinese developer and supplier of lithium-ion battery technologies. Farasis currently employs more than 3,500 people worldwide and has research and development centres in China, Germany and the US. There are currently two production plants in Ganzhou and Zhenjiang (China). A production site in Germany is currently being planned.
In addition to the production of battery cells produced with electricity from renewable energies the sustainability partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Farasis comprises also recycling and the observance of human rights in the supply chain. The recycling rates are to be increased continuously by innovative recycling concepts. An eye on the entire cobalt supply chain has third-party audit company RCS Global. They inspect according to the standards of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A prerequisite for a supply contract for battery cells is consent to the disclosure of the entire supply chain.
