Not Just Nice to Look at

The glamor is not gone by a long shot. At least not on vehicles with paint finishes from Axalta. This year, Daimler AG has honored the outstanding quality of the coating products with the Daimler Supplier Award.

The color is important. The outside appearance must be spot on, but a good paint job must be capable of much more than merely looking great. Axalta Coating Systems is a specialist in this field. For 150 years, the company has been producing high-quality paints that not just shine, but also offer convincing quality.

Attention to detail - with coatings, every layer counts.

Axalta Coating Systems produced and developed the first products in Germany in 1866. Primarily to protect carriages against stone chipping on dirt roads. Like other companies, Axalta adapted its products to the new types of vehicles arising from the rapid development of the automotive industry. In 1920, the company developed a series of fast-drying multi-colored paints for automotive paint jobs. The company headquarters were moved to Wilmington, Delaware, USA in 1922 – at the time still called “DuPont Performance Coatings.” Since then, Axalta has grown into a leading manufacturer of liquid and powder coatings.

Fluid or powder coating, the paint job has to withstand various stresses.

Buses and trucks are on the road all day long. The coating has to withstand the daily stresses of traffic and changing weathers. With its environmentally responsible design, Axalta’s liquid polyurethane paint is the most widely used paint for heavy-duty trucks worldwide. It is extremely well suited for graffiti in the top coat, and protects against corrosion, meaning a decomposition of the material. To reduce the impact on the environment, Axalta continuously improves its chemical formulations. The VOC emissions are decreased and the coatings dry in a more natural process. In addition, the coatings offer increased resistance with respect to chemical and weather impact. Powder coatings are particularly durable and heat-resistant. Axalta uses them for chassis, wheels, seat frames, exhausts and engine components.

Before the coatings are applied, the whole vehicle is provided with a primer.

Axalta has been honored in February with the Daimler Supplier Award 2015 in the category “Quality” from Global Procurement Trucks and Buses. In addition, Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) awarded Axalta as “Master of Quality” as much as 16 times. Innovative products are at the very top of the company’s agenda as well. The company is currently building a global innovation center near its headquarters. There, a new generation of coatings is going to be developed. The industry increasingly uses light-weight plastics that need unprecedented coatings. Also, the demand for waterborne coatings is rising.

Charles Shaver, CEO of the company, considers this investment in the development of the company to be vital: “[…] coatings make products not only beautiful, but more durable, energy-efficient, and productive. Our Global Innovation Center will ensure Axalta sets the pace for coatings technology around the world.” Technology leadership – a goal that Daimler also sets its sights on together with its partners.
